Since our inception, we’ve been committed to providing our customers the latest
products and updates as quickly as we can. Another shining example of this is that
our Server team recently updated all of our shared ColdFusion servers to version
CFMX 7.0.2.
Along with some important fixes, this update provides ColdFusion developers with
easy integration between CFMX and Adobe Flex 2 applications. In fact, ColdFusion
and Flex are tightly integrated now and complement each other much better than in
previous releases.
The most exciting part of this update is the inclusion of new lineup of developer
tools, libraries and runtime services that will allow developers to build and deploy
rich and innovative web applications that utilize the Flash Player runtime and Flex
2. More information regarding Flex follows in the next section of the newsletter.
We are extremely excited about the changes Adobe has thrown into this latest update,
and are pleased that we can offer the new toolsets to the large number of ColdFusion
developers we host. Remember, CrystalTech is a premier provider of hosting for the
ColdFusion community, with some of the most affordable entry-level CFMX 7.02 hosting
plans in the industry.
Adobe Flex 2 combines an intuitive programming model, a powerful Eclipse-based integrated
development environment (IDE) and a set of J2EE-based runtime services to deliver
a highly functional, powerful and flexible rich internet application (RIA). Along
with ColdFusion-specific integration points, developers can use Flex’s library of
built-in controls and services for development and design to build an entirely new
class of RIA.
In essence, Flex allows developers to overcome the limitations of today’s web browsers
by utilizing the power, portability and availability of the Adobe Flash Player.
With Flex, you can create next generation applications that act and perform more
like a desktop or client server application than a web page. A detailed article
on integrating ColdFusion and Flex 2 is available at http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/articles/cf_flex.html.
For those of you who would like to try Flex out, it is available free of charge
through the Adobe Flex 2 Software Development Kit which can be found at https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?sdid=IFYE&product=flex
(registration is required).
